2001 Earth Science Week

Saturday October 6 the GCSSEPM took an active part in the Earth Science Week festivities at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The museum and the Houston Geological Society organized Earth Science Week that kicked off on Saturday with many activities and a proclamation from Houston Mayor Lee Brown.

In the shadow of the fossil skeleton of a giant ground sloth, the Section sponsored one of 10 "Passport Stations" where museum patrons could learn about an aspect of the earth sciences. The GCSSEPM station exhibited microfossils while patrons could learn about their biology and utility in geological studies and the petroleum industry. President-Elect Tony D'Agostino, Foundation Trustee Nancy Engelhardt-Moore, member Skip Breard and volunteers Bob Moore and Nick D'Agostino showed viewers specimens of forams, nannofossils, and ostracods. Four microscopes were set up along with posters and a powerpoint slide show.
The microscopes were the hit of day. Museum patrons, especially the kids, really enjoyed viewing real specimens and talking about how fossils can be studied. President-Elect Tony D'Agostino noted, "We had a steady stream of viewers from 10AM to 5PM and even drew museum staff and sponsors of other Passport Stations to our display, the Section really put forth an outstanding hands-on display".
