Founded
in 1981, the GCSSEPM Foundation is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization
whose primary objective is to promote the science of stratigraphy in the
Gulf Coast region through research in sedimentary petrology, reservoir
quality, paleontology, and any other related geological and geophysical
fields, especially as it relates to petroleum geology. The Foundation
is an autonomous organization that cooperates very closely with the GCSSEPM
in acieving their common objectives and is also closely associated with
the national organization as well as Gulf Coast geological and geophysical
associations and local universities. The Foundation cooperates
with them for the furtherance of mutual objectives as they relate to the
oil industry.
Among the activities which the Foundation may engage in are:
- Conduct
research directly or through promotion, assistance, encouragement, or
support of studies and research in the field of stratigraphy and in
the science related thereto;
- Dissemination
of information relating to stratigraphy and related fields through lectures,
seminars, research conferences, symposia, publications, educational
courses, teaching aids, and by other means and material;
- To
carry on programs of continuing education in stratigraphy and related
studies;
- To
assist in career guidance to persons interested in stratigraphy and
related studies;
- To
assist public and private schools and colleges and universities and
technical schools in teaching and education in the field of stratigraphy
and related fields.
The primary means for carrying out these objectives is the hosting of
the annual Research Conference in early December. The conferences include
papers, poster sessions, and actual core reviews on 'hot' oil-related
topics. A complete listing of the conferences is given in the Research
Conference page.
In 1999, the Board of Trustees decided to name the research conference
the Bob F. Perkins Research Conference. Bob was our first executive director.
The importance of the role he played in the Section and Foundation is
discussed in the memorial to Dr. Perkins.
