GCSSEPM stands for the Gulf Coast Section of the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists, SEPM. The parent organization is now known formally as The Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM). The Gulf Coast Section was founded in 1953 for the purpose of promoting the science of stratigraphy in the Gulf Coast states (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida) through research in paleontology and sedimentary petrology, especially as it relates to petroleum geology. Not surprisingly, the area of interest increasingly has been the offshore Gulf of Mexico. The Section is closely associated with the The Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies, (GCAGS) and cooperates with The Association as well as the local geological societies which comprise the GCAGS. As part of the cooperative effort between GCSSEPM and GCAGS, both groups hold a joint annual meeting and jointly publish a Transactions, which has become widely recognized as the leading source of geological information for the Gulf Coast basin. In 1980, the GCSSEPM initiated Research Conferences for the purposes of contributing to the communication of research results, the encouragement of exchanging of information and ideas, and the stimulation of further research in the discovery and development of hydrocarbons and other natural resources of the Gulf Coast region. The GCSSEPM Foundation became the sponsor of the Conferences in 1982. In 1999, the Board of Trustees of the Foundation decided to name the conference series after Bob F. Perkins. In addition, The Foundation assumed all publication functions and is the publisher of all conference papers, field trip guides, type locality descriptions, and all other papers. At present, the GCSSEPM Section Newsletter is mailed (February, July, and October) to over 300 current members, many of whom are from outside the Gulf region. |
