PETROLEUM SYSTEMS OF DEEP-WATER BASINS:
GLOBAL AND GULF OF MEXICO EXPERIENCE

December 2-5, 2001
Adams Mark Hotel
Houston, Texas

On December 2-5, the GCSSEPM Foundation and the Gulf Coast Section hosted the 21st Annual Bob F. Perkins Research Conference entitled Petroleum Systems of Deep-Water Basins: Global and Gulf of Mexico Experience. Over 370 interested geoscientists anxious to learn about the latest interpretations and technologies applied to deep-water systems worldwide attended the conference. Authors and poster presenters represented most major oil companies, academia, consulting firms and several foreign national oil companies. Discussion and debate were common and vigorous. Several new techniques and concepts were showcased including new views on overpressure, basin classification, hydrocarbon migration, and tectonic histories. There was especially heated debate about new theories on the tectonic history of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Basin and a possible "Messinian-like" event in the gulf at the close of the Paleocene.
