The GCAGS/GCSSEPM
held their 52nd Annual Convention in Austin, Texas, Oct. 30-Nov. 1, 2002
which had a greater than expected turnout of more than 1300 attendees.
On Wednesday, Oct. 30th, the Opening Session and Awards Ceremony was held
in Ballroom C of the Austin Convention Center between 5:00 p.m. and 6:30
p.m. Doug Ratcliff, General Chairman, Peter R. Rose, GCAGS President,
Tony D'Agostino GCSSEPM President and Peter McCabe, SEPM President, opened
the Session with brief addresses.
Tony
D'Agostino presented the 2001 GCAGS/GCSSEPM Grover
E. Murray Best Published Paper awards to the senior authors; 1st Place
to Edward M. Norwood and Lise Brinton for their paper "Re-examination
of Late Jurassic Reef Building in the East Texas Basin: a Maturing Gas
Play"; 2nd Place to Ernest A. Mancini and William C. Parcell "Outcrop
Analogs for reservoir Characterization and Modeling of Smackover Microbial
Reefs in the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico Area", and 3rd Place to
Ezat Heydari and Roger N. Townsend "Fluvial Sedimentation in the
Cotton Valley Group in Stringer Field, Jasper County, Mississippi".
Tony
D'Agostino was pleased to present the 2002
GCSSEPM Honorary Membership Awards to Peter R. Vail and William E.
Galloway. Michael J. Nault received his second GCSSEPM
Distinguished Service Award following a biographical summary given
by close friend and associate Sylvester Q. Breard. Along with several
other recipients, GCSSEPM Past-President, Charles C. Smith, received the
GCAGS Distinguished Service Award from Pete Rose.
Two
of this year's GCSSEPM
Foundation Ed Picou Fellowship Grant for Graduate Studies in Earth Science
recipients are shown on either side of Ed, Astrid Makowitz (left) and
Laura Net (right).
Peter
J. McCabe, SEPM President shown with Tony D'Agostino, gave an outstanding
presentation for the GCSSEPM Luncheon entitled "The Fourth Dimension:
Time and Scale in Stratigraphy and Sedimentology" on Friday, Nov.
1 at 11:30 a.m. in the Travis Room at the Radisson Hotel.
