Over the past two decades, the mission of petroleum explorationists has evolved from (a) finding hydrocarbons to (b) finding economic hydrocarbons with reduced risk. Once found, the job of exploiting an economically viable hydrocarbon resource in an optimal manner lies with a group of technical and business professionals with a broad range of expertise. From a technical perspective, the discipline of reservoir characterization has evolved toward increasingly quantitative, interdisciplinary analysis, mainly through development of sophisticated technology and integration of multiple disciplines. As the methodologies used in reservoir characterization continue to improve, the economic perspective needs to be equally integrated into the reservoir discovery-development workflow in order to maximize economic hydrocarbon recovery.

The 2006 GCSSEPM Foundation Bob F. Perkins Research Conference is intended to provide a forum for not only presenting the latest in integrated technology and its application, but to encourage integration of risk analysis and economic evaluation into the characterization workflow. Evolution of the characterization workflow, is, and will continue to be driven by corporate demands for shorter cycle times, greater efficiency in time and money, and accelerated production. Key operational questions include:

  • What is the optimal characterization workflow for the reservoir in question, and how is it best implemented?
  • How are economics and decision-making integrated with the technical understanding of the reservoir?
  • How is uncertainty best evaluated and addressed?

The Call for Papers has been answered with a number of significant papers that will address these questions from both a case history and a generic approach. Geographically, papers have been received from key global hydrocarbon provinces such as India, North Slope of Alaska, Mexico, Australia, Norwegian Sea, Nigeria, Venezuela, and the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. More generic themes include advances in geophysics, geochemistry, biostratigraphy, and geostatistics, and their application to both carbonate and clastic reservoirs.

All papers will be presented in a poster format; because of time constraints, we will select the most significant work for oral presentation. All authors will be writing at least expanded abstracts to complete articles, which will be published in a CD, in the same manner as we have done since 1999. This means full color illustrations, longer articles, and, perhaps, some oversized illustrations.

As in the past, our registration fees will include ice breaker, meals, and refreshments. This year the conference will be 2 ½ days of presentations! For GCSSEPM Members, who are current in their dues, early registration (before November 13, 2006) will be $350. Early registration for non-members or those who are behind in their dues will be $375. Registration after November 13, 2006, will be $425. A limited number of student registrations will be available for $200. Because of expected space demands, student registrations will go on sale after October 1, 2006. (Note: Student presenters can register before this date.) All students should e-mail (gcssepm@houston.rr.com) for a special form. Up-to-date SECTION members 70 or over may register for $200 BEFORE November 13th. (Note: Current in dues means 2007 expiration or later. Non-members may join and members behind in their dues may renew on the registration form.) Cancellation Policy: Before 11/13/06, $75 charge; 11/13-11/24, $125 charge if we have a replacement; no refunds will be granted for cancellations after 11/24/06. Payment may be made by our secure form on line, by mail, or by fax: 281-586-0833. (FULL Session registration on-site will be $450.)

The most current information and registration forms for the conference are always available on our web site at www.gcssepm.org. We will try and maintain an accurate listing of papers and authors. As we did last year, the final program will be on-line and available for downloading before the conference starts. In addition, we will have on-line registration available!
